Isn’t Media Poll before Election Undemocratic? Manipulative Gossip? (Deepak Sarkar, 12/19/2005)
<9-11 Military Coup Why Media Is Silent? Remote Military Hijacking Bin Laden Not Guilty>
As
the North American private media virus is spreading throughout the world
rapidly, it is time to evaluate whether media polls based on a tiny set of
selective data is democratic or even abusive towards the true democratic
process depriving individual to form own opinion toward choosing a candidate!
Most
people have no knowledge about the source and volume of media polling data as
they are watching their favorite Television Channel, listening to Radio Stations
or reading Newspapers in Print or Online! Usually,
the predictions are statistical extrapolations based on only 500-1000 people in
the media database! Even
God doesn’t know how they selected those people and collected their opinions. It is not surprising to
see competitive media in someway agree with others polling or stay very close
to it, within statistical margin of error!
The
argument is why people need to listen to these fractional statistics before the
actual election? People belonging to a
political party usually vote for their candidates irrespective of private
polling. But the majority of people who are without political affiliation are
severely affected being manipulated by those polling data often refrain from
voting wasting the most important democratic right!
Let
us consider this Case Study for an Asian immigrant living in North America for 38
years! Yes, I have been living in North
America for 38 years residing in many different States and Provinces including
Ohio, Ontario, New York, Virginia, California and British Columbia, first as
landed immigrant and then Canadian and US citizens. But surprisingly, I never
received a call from any media asking for my opinion whether it is for County
election or State/Provincial election or the Federal election. And just to add
little spice to my assertion, I also lived a middle class life inheriting many
credit cards, mortgages, car loans etc. while working for fortune 500
corporations.
So,
it is time to evaluate whether we need this manipulative gossip from the media
analysts, talk show hosts and news anchor persons which only diverts people’s
focus from the real issues at the heart of the election polluting the
democratic process! We pass laws to
keep smokers outside building for second hand smoking. We pass laws against
drinking and driving! Isn’t it
appropriate to pass laws banning all pre-election media polling which not only
affect individual voter but also the very artery of the Democratic Process of a
Country! We need one election only on election Day J
