Darkness

(Written in Calcutta, May 1997, when visiting for Father’s illness)

It was dark!

I was standing on the concrete roof top

After an outage of electric power!

Everything quiet down

Except occasional voices here and there

And distant moving airplanes, buses or cars!

I looked at the sky –

It was full of planets and stars!

I saw Orion

I saw Seven Dwarf

I saw the North star

And the evening star -

I could even identify most planets so dear!

I realized, I never looked at the sky

With such open curious mind!

As I was staring at the distant stars -

In the deep dark night sky

Noticing their flickering and colour -

Suddenly I saw a shooting star

Just appeared and disappeared

Painting your face brilliantly

In the deep dark sky!

I saw a second one instantly

Illuminating the last painting momentarily!
